Improving outcomes for families
Cornerstone Chief Executive Helen Costa joined the panel of speakers at The Future of Adoption in the UK on Wednesday, February 1.
The seminar was held at the Public Policy Exchange in Westminster to discuss Redesigning the Adoption System to Improve Outcomes for Children and Families.
The panel looked at a number of themes including:
- Latest data and emerging trends
- Up-to-date training for social workers
- Reducing unnecessary delays in adoption
- Challenging existing attitudes and encouraging people to adopt harder-to-place children
- Improving post-adoption support
- Putting the voice of adopters and children at the heart of local policy decision making and service delivery
Helen said: “It was great to be part of the panel at the Public Policy Exchange on the Future of Adoption in the UK and focus on how we can help to ensure the adopter and children’s voice is at the very heart of delivery and decision making.
“We know that by introducing authentic, user led support and tools earlier in the adoption journey we can have a very real positive impact and give adopters confidence in their task of adoptive parenting and help them be more open and work through any worries and concerns.
“Our peer led mentoring and parenting training courses help to ensure that we stay focused on the child and adopters needs and voice.”
The seminar was an opportunity for local authorities, social services, adoption agencies, children’s care services, relevant court services and the third sector to examine the changes and explore opportunities for the future of adoption.
Other speakers included Dr Anna Gupta, Senior Lecturer in Social Work, Royal Holloway, University of London; Dr John Simmonds OBE, Director of Policy, Research & Development, CoramBAAF, Brenda Farrell, UK Head of Business Family Placement, Barnardo’s, Ann Domeney, Interim Deputy Director Children and Adults’ Services, Medway Council and Judith Craig Morency, Social Worker, Adoption Arena.
